In minimally invasive surgery, a trocar is used to access a body cavity and insert medical instruments through its shaft. The trocar can also be used to drain fluids from body cavities.
It is typically used with a pointed obturator. Once inserted into the cavity to be punctured, the pointed obturator can be retracted. This allows the fluid to flow out through the trocar cannula or, during a surgical procedure, allows for the insertion of optic or grasping, cutting and other instruments after the obturator has been removed.
